Earth Law Center

  • Earth law is often called “ecocentric” law. It is an emerging body of law for protecting, restoring, and stabilizing Earth's life and life-support systems. Within the framework of Earth law is the idea that ecosystems have the right to exist, thrive, and evolve—and that Nature should be able to defend its rights in court, just like people can.

ELC is based in Durango, Colorado, USA, and assists governments across the world to write and apply Rights of Nature laws.

Some of the major contributions and achievements they’ve made in recent years to establish these rights:

    • Created the Earth Law Framework for Marine Protected Areas

    • Launched their Ocean Rights Program as an initiative to the UN, gaining over 70 organizational sign-ons from 32 countries and cumulating in a speech to the UN General Assembly

    • In El Salvador, secured recognition of forests as “living entities” with human duties to protect and restore these forests

    • Won a major victory against California’s State Water Board to enforce the Clean Water Act and state water law.

    • ELC has been featured in multiple U.N. Secretary General’s reports on Harmony with Nature and helped lead the UN to initiate the implemention of a committee on Earth Law.

  • ELC had just launched the first of a two-part Ambassador Certification Program. This Certification was key, as it would bring people into the Ambassador Community – an implementation network which would allow people to design and complete projects which most inspired and engaged them.

    • My role was to design the second part as an interactive PowerPoint presentation, broken out into four sections, for a total of 80 slides. As the user advanced through each section, the next section would unlock for them to complete until they had completed all four sections allowing them to attain their certification. As this was a self-directed, online course, ELC needed assistance to uplevel the visual impact and engagement.

    Requirements included:

    • Adhering to the ELC brand guidelines when designing the certification deck

    • Sourcing and/or creating appropriate imagery and iconography for inclusion in the deck

    • Making creative recommendations to increase engagement

    • Weekly meetings to ensure that all team members were meeting project requirements and to provide status updates

    • Providing four final English PowerPoint decks for translation into multiple languages

  • This project was completed from first briefing to final hand-off within 4 weeks, despite working across 2 different time zones and within tight timelines

$2,397 was saved, allowing ELC to launch new frontline initiatives and drive current ones forward with greater momentum.
